In 2001, machinery was one of the driving forces of Italian exports. The figures for the various segments of the industry showed a trade surplus for the year of 10.5 BN Euros. This record was achieved during a difficult moment for the world economy and is a significant improvement over 2000 (+5%) as well as 1999 (+12%). Overall, the machinery sectors, which group slightly less than 2,000 small and medium-sized companies with more than 80,000 employees, posted a turnover in excess of 22.5 BN Euros in 2001.
