Heineken announced recently that it will close the Beamish & Crawford plant at Cork with the loss of 160 jobs. Around 40 employees are expected to transfer with the production to the old Murphys plant at Leitrim St across the city bringing an end to a brewing tradition on South Main St, which stretches back to at least 1602. It had been hoped that contracts to brew and package Miller a and Carling brands would keep Beamish brewing, but Heineken decided on closure after looking at both breweries' capacity, expansion capability and future investment requirements. The move is designed to contribute around £145M of cost savings after the S&N takeover. Heineken also confirmed S&N, its UK operating company, will take responsibility for the sale of its Murphy's Stout brand from InBev when a brewing/distribution deal ends soon.
