Indian Float Plant Now In Production

Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd, which has set up a float glass facility at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, worth Rs 5250m, hopes to break even by the end of 2001. The plant went into commercial production on 1 July this year. Currently operating at 770% capacity, according to MD Mr Santhanam, the plant will have a maximum capacity of 200,000 tonnes/year. The plant is hoping to export around 30% of its total production, half of which would go to West Asia, S East Asia, Australia and the Pacific Rim countries, while the other half would be destined for Europe. Saint-Gobain Glass India will focus on the construction and automotive markets and would also manufacture glass for mirrors and reflective glass. In addition, there is the potential for value-added glasses to be produced.
