Impala Uses Cassava

SABMiller has launched its Impala cassava-based beer, brewed in Mozambique at Cervejas de Mocambique in the northern province of Nampula. Bottled in amber glass, this is the first commercial beer made from the cassava plant and will bridge the gap between home brews (which are often lethal!) and more expensive barley brews. The grist contains 70% cassava and a reduced duty rate was negotiated with the Mozambique government. A major project was needed to ensure supplies in an initiative called Farming Better Futures which uses over 2000 smallholder farmers to growth. Mozambicans consume around 8 litres of beer per capita each year.
