Hazardous Waste: The Rules Are Changing

DEFRA & the waste industry are urging businesses to check out the new hazardous waste regulations before they come into force on 16/07/05. They emphasise it is essential to act now as many firms may find themselves hazardous waste producers for the first time, & the implications may not be fully appreciated. Because of their chemical content, some everyday household & businesses items such as monitors, TVs & fluorescent tubes have joined the list of toxic, corrosive & irritant substances put under the "hazardous" waste banner. The new standards - the waste acceptance criteria (WAC) will have to be met by all hazardous waste being disposed of to landfill. Firms will have to be able to describe exactly what their waste contains & ensure that waste going to landfill meets the WAC.
