Defra are urging businesses to know the facts on new hazardous waste regulations before they come into force in July. From 16/07/05, new standards,"The Waste Acceptance Criteria" will have to be met by all hazardous waste being disposed of to landfill. Businesses must be in a position to describe exactly what their waste contains. This "characterisation" will determine what measures can be put in place to minimise such waste, ease its recovery or ensure its safe disposal. The Hazardous Waste Regulations have been introduced to improve the tracking & safe management of hazardous waste in England, from the producer to the disposal or treatment facility. These new controls will include a requirement for most producers of hazardous waste to notify their premises to the Environment Agency. See: www.hazardouswaste.org.uk
