Government Awards Contract For Fluorescent Lamp Reprocessing

A major government contract to recycle or "safely dispose" of up to 1m fluorescent tubes a year has been awarded to Biffa Waste Services. The deal should provide a major fillip to the UK's lamp recycling business and reduce costs considerably. Almost all the 80m fluorescent tubes disposed of annually in the UK are sent to landfill as part of the general commercial waste stream. Last year, in a move to kick start a new recycling industry, the government announced that it was seeking a contractor to recycle or "safely dispose" of the 1m fluorescent tubes a year which it throws away. The contract was awarded to Biffa in June.
