Johns Manville Inc., Littleton, Colorado and Sandia National Labs., Albuquerque, NM, have initiated a CRADA for a collaborative investigation into the dissolution of borosilicate glasses and glass fibres. By combining experimental characterization of the dissolution process with state-of-the-art computational techniques, this CRADA provides a unique approach to obtaining detailed information and modeling capabilities concerning dissolution in glasses. The inital 12-month study is expected to impact a number of important issues, including dissolution effects on glass fibres, durability of glass-to-metal seals and long-term reliability of glass storage containers.
