Wiegand-Glas, the independent German glass container maker, has co-operated with the global aluminium manufacturer Alcoa to develop a glass stopper to replace cork in wine bottles. Production is due to start late this year. Called the Vino-lok, the new product is a glass stopper that has the appearance of a decorative stopper but is guaranteed to hold firmly in the bottle - and it can be resealed! To secure the stopper and to ensure its authenticity, a shaped and coloured aluminium covering cap has been developed. The design removes any problems of corking or taint, but is regarded as neutral in technical terms and from the point of view of the wine connoisseur. It is also completely recyclable. As well as the glass stopper, a Plexiglas version will also be available and the sealing technology will be supplied direct to wine producers. (whole item)
