Poland's glass waste recycling industry needs to meet EU standards by 2007, according to the National Association of Glass Packaging, FOS. The EU regulations require that between 50-56% of the glass packaging sold has to be recovered and between 25-45% has to be recycled. This means that the amount of packaging to be recovered will be 2M tonnes, while 1M tonnes of waste needs to be recycled in 2007. FOS estimated that some 750,000 tonnes packaging waste was recovered in 2003. Poland needs to promote selective waste collection and municipalities need to provide additional containers for glass, paper and plastics in order to meet EU requirements. Polish glassworks are now able to remelt 500,000 tonnes of glass waste. There are only 30,000 containers for the collection of glass in Poland. Nearly 90,000 more are needed in order to meet EU standards on waste management.
