Glass Museum Under Construction

Taylor Woodrow Construction has been awarded a contract by the Hotties Science and Arts Centre Ltd, St Helens, to build "The World of Glass," a £14m visitor centre and museum. The project involves the construction of two exhibition halls, a 6m high glazed pavillion and a 13m high, self-supporting brick entrance cone, providing a total floor area of 4,500m2. The pavilion is to be linked by a glass walled footbridge across a canal to the Cone House, an existing building which is to be renovated. The centre, which is receiving Heritage Lottery Funding, will be used for state-of-the-art exhibitions about glass and the glass industry. Ideas (Yorkshire) Ltd is the exhibition designer and BDP is responsible for the lighting design. Work on the project began 14 September 1998, and is schedule for completion in October 1999.
