Glass Has Lost Weight

A new lightweight glass has been developed by Glasspac.com that is claimed to be 50% lighter than it was ten years ago, requires fewer raw materials and using less energy. While enabling increased machine speeds and decreased production costs, the lightweight glass is expected to yield environmental benefits and lower costs in complying with packaging regulations. The increased numbers of bottles per pallet and more pallets per load, resulting from the lightweight glass, is expected to reduce transport costs. The lightweighting is achieved through new techniques which distribute the glass in the mould more consistently, using less glass to produce a reliable wall thickness, strong enough to contain high pressure carbonated drinks.
