Glass Bottles Help Retain Beer'S Flavour

Glass bottles are better than metal cans at retaining beer's flavour, according to Brewing Research International. In tests, the UK-based company found that canned beer is less successful at resisting undesirable flavour changes and has a shorter shelf life than bottled beer. BRI say this is due to the higher amount of in pack oxygen during the packaging process. Four weeks after filling, the disparity between glass and metal packaging doubles, while at six weeks, flavour instability is three times more pronounced in canned beer. Stability is affected by oxygen, antioxidants and hop compounds and can produce a metallic, woody and earth taste. (whole item)
