A ban on drinking from glasses outside city centre bars & restaurants is to be lifted to give Manchester a more `cosmopolitan feel'. Wine glasses, pint pots & bottles were banned from Manchester's streets & replaced with plastic cups under a by-law brought in 8y ago following a campaign to halt glass attacks. Licensing bosses & police will meet to draw up guidelines to reverse the ban. The move has come after restaurant bosses approached the authorities saying customers have complained about being forced to drink from `unsophisticated' safety cups with meals. It is understood strict guidelines will allow restaurants or bars which serve food on outside terraces to apply to use glasses again. Staff are likely to be required to permanently supervise the areas & quickly remove empties or face having their permission revoked.
