Transparent armor for military vehicles has recently gained renewed attention. However, the ballistic impact and penetration processes of glass armors are not well understood. Different types of glasses exhibit different ballistic responses, and a pressing need exists to better comprehend and model these responses in order to develop lightweight armors. The need to better understand the processes of densification and dynamic fracture and the need for input and validation data for continuum models are highlighted as examples.
