Glasgow Approves Glass Bottle Ban

Glasgow City Council has recently approved plans to prohibit the sale of all food and drinks in glass bottles from late-night takeaways in the city. The move by Scotland's biggest city results from concerns about glass being used as a weapon by people leaving pubs or clubs. Malcolm McLean, convener of Glasgow City Council's licensing committee, said the decision on 27 January 2004 was a small move to help tackle the dangers of glass on the streets throughout the city and the wider area. "If we don't have glass on the streets then people can't hit one another with glass bottles and they can't break glass bottles and do even worse", Mr. McLean said. The ban applies to more than 100 premises licensed to sell food after 11pm. (whole item)
