Ghana Waste Crisis

The waste situation in Accra, Ghana, has reached such a crisis that the city held a one-day clean-up exercise, bringing commercial activity to a temporary standstill. Plastic litter from sachet water was the main culprit, leading to a call from the Chief Executive for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to ban it. In the event, the government has decided to offer support for companies heading into the recycling sector, with the Plastic Waste Management Task force asking for tax exemptions to cover infrastructure such as imported collection trucks. The AMA has also asked the plastic water sachet producers to foot 85% of the bill for the disposal of their products, but they claim such a level is unrealistic.
