Food Packaging Hygiene Standards Discussed

Food packaging suppliers, food producers, retailers and interested organisations in the UK are being asked to consider a draft technical hygiene standard produced jointly by an Institute of Packaging (IOP) ad the British Retail Consortium (BRC) working group. The standard sets out detailed criteria that suppliers will need to meet in order to gain a certificate of inspection. Chairman of the working party and BRC representative Terry Robins said "This standard will assist retailers and food manufacturers in their fulfilment of legal obligations by providing a common basis for the audit of companies supplying packaging for food products to retailers. We envisage that the standard will become the benchmark by which audits are undertaken and will supersede other audit schemes currently available."
