Food & Drink Transport Survey

The Department for Transport recently announced that it has commissioned major surveys of the food & drink transport sectors stemming from the Department's Strategy for Sustainable Distribution. These surveys will explore the efficiency of the transport of food & drink in England, whether carried by manufacturers, retailers or logistics companies. The Department for Transport conducted similar surveys in 1998 & 2002. These focussed on 5 key performance indicators: vehicle fill, time utilisation, empty running, fuel consumption & deviation from schedule. The new surveys are designed to build on this previous base of knowledge & it is hoped that a wide range of companies will actively participate. Participation is said to present a unique opportunity for companies to benchmark their own operations against agreed, nationally recognised criteria that have been in place since 1998.
