LG Philips LCD has announced plans to build a fifth generation display fabrication plant in Kumi, South Korea. A year after the formation of the joint venture, the company is planning a plant for the production of large AMLCDs, up to 34in across. The plant is expected to cost about $1.5bn to build and will begin mass production in the second half of 2002. The glass substrates used on the line will be about a square meter in size. The resulting displays will be used for 15 and 28in desktop monitors, notebook computer displays and 20-34 wide screen televisions. LG Philips LCD has only just begun mass production on its fourth generation fabrication line, also in Kumi. This line uses 680mm x 880mm substrates and is the first line to reach mass production using these substrates. It will have the capacity to process 30,000/month this year and double that number next.
