First Pet Wine Bottle

Wolf Blass Wines of Australia has launched what is thought to be the first full size PET wine bottle in the world for its Bilyara Reserve products. The design holds 750ml, but is shorter than the usual wine bottle for easier storage in a fridge. Opponents of the move cite the fact that production of the plastic bottles takes nearly as much energy as does production of an equivalent glass bottle from new materials; production of an equivalent wine bottle using cullet in the batch takes less energy. They also cite the problems in recycling plastic, and also that the production of plastic resins for PET bottles generates far more toxic pollution of water and air than does glass bottle manufacture.
