Saint-Gobain is to build its £62m glass factory in the Yorkshire & Humber region, creating 166 jobs directly and many more in "spin-offs". The company is believed to have narrowed its nation-wide search for a suitable site to two locations in the South Yorkshire-Humber area. A spokesman for Yorkshire & Humberside Development Agency, the private and publicly-funded body charged with marketing the region, said Saint-Gobain was attracted by the area's transport links, availability of sites and quality of workforce. A decision on the exact location is expected soon as production is exptected to start by December 1999.
