Over the past 25 years gas and oil burners for glass melting have undergone substantial changes, from simple pipes to todays sophisticated high technology combustion systems. These changes were catalysed first by high fuel prices and later by emission regulations. This paper gives an overview of these changes and mentions other methods that have been developed and experimented for reducing NOx emissions. Combustion technology is shown to be an important primary measure for reducing NOx emissions but to achieve the best results must go hand-in-hand with furnace design and operational control.
