The EU has demanded that member countries agree a common energy policy, following accusations of rampant national protectionism & flaws in the way the market currently works. Problems in operation of the market have been blamed in part for the very steep recent increases in energy prices. A new EU energy policy is being demanded by the EU energy commissioner because of growing challenges of climate change, security of supply & the completion of the EU internal market. Priorities include the appointment of an EU-wide energy regulator whose aim initial aim would be to ensure the full interconnection of energy distribution networks within Member states. The EU will also be promoting development of "clean coal" technology to reduce emissions form coal-fired power stations; development of synthetic & alternative fuels; & the growth of "distributed" energy production.
