Enfield Council say its lights are among the greenest in England following a PFI lighting deal for all 20,000 of the borough's streetlights to use 100% green energy. The new Enfield lamp columns are being fitted with Arc Lanterns, which are said to be high performance, are energy efficient and claimed to be almost completely recyclable. All the borough's old concrete columns for streetlights are being replaced with steel ones. Councillor Terry Neville said: "Enfield Council is committed to delivering eco-friendly services. We already have vehicles run on biofuel so ensuring that our street lights use 100% green energy was the next logical step." Enfield says the reduction of carbon emissions also has an economic benefit for council taxpayers. The 3/y green energy contract costs less than a 2/y brown contract, meaning savings of up to £30,000/pa.
