Energy-intensive industry will be exempt from paying renewable energy and climate change subsidies from 2016, chancellor George Osborne announced in the recent Budget. Osborne announced a range of measures that should greatly reduce energy bills for everyone from chemicals firms to steel manufacturers, as well as households. But Budget documents admit the measures will increase electricity generation by at least 4%. ENDS estimates this will raise UK CO2 emissions by at least 1%. These measures will displease environmentalists, and some will argue the announcements undermine the government’s commitment to low-carbon energy.
