San Miguel Yamamura Asia Corporation (SMY) is a j-v company of San Miguel Corp., the largest food, beverage & packaging company in Southeast Asia, based in the Philippines, & Nihon Yamamura Glass Co of Japan. In 2005, SMY, which specialises in the manufacture of glass bottles, decided to award Siemens the contract for the installation of a new control system for a glass furnace. Siemens beat out strong competition in securing the contract for the project, which involved completely migrating the old controls of a 180/tpd glass furnace in Cavite, Philippines. Siemens offered a DCS (distributed control system) solution based on Simatic PCS 7. Nihon acted as consultant, and Asahi Glass Ceramics (Japan) supplied the furnace.
