When it comes to taking empty glass bottles to the recycling bin, women are more active than men, according to a study by Ecovidrio of recycling habits among Spaniards aged 18-65. Nevertheless, 52% of men say the task is the responsibility of everyone in the home & say that they are the only recyclers in 39% of cases. For their part, women are in charge of recycling 46% of the time while 45% consider that it is the responsibility of all. The results of the study carried out in March-April/06 by market research company Quor confirm an increase among both men & women in recycling of glass, paper & cardboard. In the case of glass recycling, there has been a greater development in environmental awareness among men. Furthermore, men have been recycling glass for longer than women (five years on average for men against four years for women). There is also a gender difference in the containers associated with glass recycling: the image that men associate is the bottle, while women, in addition to bottles, mention jars & vials to a greater extent. Generally, men excuse not recycling glass containers because of the lack of bins (61% of cases). Women divide their excuses among lack of habit (36%), the lack of bins (34%) & the non-use of glass containers (28%). Women are more receptive than men to awareness raising campaigns on recycling, with 81% of the women surveyed believing that campaigns make them think again compared to 68% of men. These campaigns are seen as necessary by 87% of women compared to 81% of men. Lastly, 75% of the women interviewed are of the opinion that the campaigns are interesting, slightly ahead of men on 68%.
