The EC wants to improve the security of energy supply in EU member countries, while at the same item combating climate change & making the energy industry more competitive. To this end, it has tabled proposals to pave the way for a common EU energy policy. Proposals include a cut of at least 20% in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020; greater use of renewable energy sources to limit global temperature changes to 2 deg C higher than pre-industrial levels; and a 20% energy efficiency improvement, making the EU the most energy-efficient region in the world. This article looks at the implications for the EU glass industry.
