Ea Issues Guidance On Glass Calculation

Standstill on the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) (Amendment) Regulations 2012 has now ended and the Regulations should come into force shortly. The original Regulation incorrectly stated that 63% of the total obligated glass tonnage must be sent to remelt applications, rather than 63% of the glass recycling obligation (ie 51%). The Environment Agency has issued guidance on the correct formula for calculation of the glass remelt obligation. Speaking in the House of Lords Grand Committee, Lord de Mauley said that in practical terms, the error has had no impact on business, as the environment agencies had been using a correct version of the formula, and enforcing against the intended 63% target.
