Defra - Plans To Make Prn Money More Visible

Defra have announced that they plan to make Packaging Waste Recovery Note (PRN) system more visible to councils & producers are set to be included in a consultation due to be published shortly. Defra said the measure would be in direct response to calls for transparency from both local authorities and industry. Along with greater transparency the Government would also be setting new packaging recycling targets for businesses and calling for greater joint working in the consultation on the Packaging Regulations for 2011 to 2020. While the UK has already achieved its 2008 EU packaging recycling target of 60%, the government plans to increase the domestic targets for obligated businesses up until 2020, in order to become one of the best performers in Europe. The overall target is expected to be raised to around 70-75%, however this has still to be confirmed. Rebecca Cocking
