Corning Inc has said it plans to expand its operations in Taiwan to meet sharply increasing demand for displays used in consumer products such as laptop computers and video cameras. The company said it expects worldwide demand to more than double by 2002 for the flat panel liquid crystal displays, and it believes Taiwan display manufacturers will capture significant market share of this projected growth. Taiwan produces half of the world's PC monitors and over 30% of the world's notebook computers, but imports nearly all of its flat panel displays from Japanese and Korean suppliers. Numerous Taiwanese display manufacturers have, however, recently announced plans to add domestic LCD capacity.
