Saint-Gobain Containers (USA) is to pay over $2.2M in civil penalties & will install emissions controls on at least 2 of its US furnaces, as part of an agreement with the federal government & 10 states to settle environmental allegations. According to reports from a state attorney, SG will pay a reported $1.15M to the USA & $1.1M to states & agencies, including $100,000 to Massachusetts. In addition, two furnaces at its Milford MA facility will be refitted by 2014, installing controls to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions & upgrading or replacing controls that collect particles from air. SG issued a statement confirming that, "While SGC continues to deny the alleged Clean Air Act violations, we are nonetheless pleased to work with the EPA as the first glass container company to come to agreement under their glass enforcement initiative."
