China Curbs Glass Sector

At an industrial conference late in 2000, Shi Wanpeng, China's deputy minister of the state economic and trade commission, outlined the nation's macro control targets for the eight major industries of textiles, metallurgy, coal, petro-chemicals, sugar-making, building materials, electric power and pharmaceuticals. Plans for the building materials industry include keeping output of flat glass to within 170m weight crates and closing down 100 small glass production lines. The restrictions are designed to curb over-production.
