Checks Planned On Safety Glass

Trading Standards inspectors in Newcastle have been tracking down companies who are not using safety glass where necesary, by checking doors and windows which have been installed in the latter half of 1999. In a similar campaign in Stafford earlier in 1999, they discovered one in four of the houses they checked had the wrong type of glass fitted and one company was fined £3,500. "Safety glass should be used in certain places like patio doors because it doesn't shatter if you walk into it," said inspector Bryan Cock. "But it is difficult for people to check, so we are looking for volunteers who are willing to let us check work they have had done." (whole item)
