Ceramics are well known for exhibiting a range of properties that are of benefit in the process of bending glass for automotive, architectural and speciality glass applications. Ceramic tooling offers excellent stability at the elevated temperature with virtually no shrinkage and the ability to be thermally cycled without degradation of the tool and importantly the tool surface. Glass formers who need to produce forming tools, especially where complex geometries are a factory, are best served using a cast ceramic tool to avoid the significant costs of machining a complex geometry on an alloy steel tool which can exhibit warping and oxidation.
