Ceramic Articles In Contact With Food (England) Regulations 2006

The DTI launched a consultation seeking views on their proposals to implement Directive 2005/31/EC, amending Directive on ceramic articles that are intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, which aims to make it easier for producers, distributors & enforcement authorities to ensure that ceramic articles do not exceed existing migration limits for cadmium & lead. The draft Regs are intended to replace the Ceramic Ware (Safety) Regs 1988 & include a new requirements that ceramic products intended for, but not yet in contact with foodstuffs, be accompanied at all marketing stages (up to and including retail) by documentation stating that they comply with the rules applicable to them. There will also be a clear obligation on producers & importers to make available to enforcement authorities on request, documentation demonstrating compliance with migration limits. Performance criteria have also been set, which the analytical methods employed must comply with. The requirements of the Directive must be transposed by 20 May 2007.
