Owens Corning confirmed 11 March 2009 that it has laid off nearly 50 workers at the company's plant at Guelph (Ontario, Canada). The Ohio-based company has been scaling back production in direct response to the global economic slowdown. In the previous week, the company laid off 250 employees at its Amarillo, Texas, location. More work stoppages and layoffs are expected throughout 2009 at the company's operations around the world. "I can confirm for you that employees at our facility in Guelph were notified of layoffs on 10 March", said Scott Dietz, Owens Corning's vice-president of investor relations and corporate communications. Mr. Dietz said close to 50 workers will be affected. There are currently about 190 employees at the plant.
