Scientists have developed an ultra-lightweight material for body armour that is so strong bullets will bounce off it. The elastic vest is a great improvement on existing body armour, which slows the velocity of the bullet in several layers of different materials but can result in anyone hit being knocked over by the impact. A high-tech design of metal alloy and metallic glass developed and patented by materials engineers at Oxford University has proved strong enough in tests to deflect the round. "Essentially, the idea is that bullets will just bounce off into the ground. We don't want them to be deflected too much, because that could be dangerous - just enough to protect the wearer," said David Eastheam, project manager at Isis Innovation, the technology transfer arm of Oxford Univ.
