David Workman, Director General of British Glass, was elected President of the Brussels-based EU Glass Manufacturers' umbrella body, CPIV, at its General Assembly in June 2005. Commenting on his appointment, he said: "I take up this position at a critical time. Around Europe we face increased costs for energy & from legislative compliance whilst global competition is getting tougher. The industry needs a strong voice at the centre of Europe, not just in the Commission but also in Parliament. The sheer size of the task in an enlarged EU, is such that it can only be effectively delivered through an industry-wide umbrella body. After all, the major issues currently being tackled impact equally across all sub-sectors." He concluded: "I hope to be able to play a constructive part in raising the glass industry's profile in the corridors of power in Brussels."
