Branching Out To Green Glass

Lewis & Towers has recently conducted its first emerald green container manufacture campaign. During the campaign, 15 items were produced for a variety of drinks products, in sizes ranging from 375ml to 1 litre. Lewis & Towers has one furnace which produces around 40 tonnes/day. Until now amber has been the only colour on offer. The company now intends to alternate the supply of amber with green glass and expects to switch colour supply up to four times/year. Green glass is currently being supplied to a number of bottlers in the UK and Europe and, according to John Daniels, MD, the move will benefit manufacturers whose typical run requirements tend to range from 20,000 to half a million containers, as it opens up the possibility of a cost-effective packaging supply of green glass in relatively smaller quantitites on a just-in-time basis.
