The EU Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) ongoing scientific work into the safety of bisphenol A was up for discussion at a meeting on 26 March. The EFSA brought together national experts from EU Member States. It plans to release its scientific opinion on BPA use in products in the summer, alongside its review of scientific literature onto he topic. This follows a scheme launched by the National Inst Environmental Health Sciences in the USA. As scientific research continues, however, the chemical's use continues to come under scrutiny with some authorities making their conclusions clear. On the basis of a study by the National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark, the Danish Government has introduced a temporary national ban on BPA in food-contact materials. Meanwhile, academia and industry are responding with alternatives to BPA.
