Tortuga Rum Company has developed a Travel Safety Pack to protect bottles that have to be transported home in checked luggage due to new airport security regulations. The Caribbean operator has been trialling the new bag, which can hold a standard 1-litre bottle of spirits, after air-freighting a small quantity from the Chinese manufacturer. A further 75,000 are on order and Tortuga intends to sell any surplus to other duty free operators for around US$200/1000. A larger bag to hold 1.75/l bottles is planned. The bag is liquid-proof and bubble-wrapped and fits neatly into existing carry home boxes, eliminating the need for dividers, which cuts packaging costs. The bag is also reusable. The company was forced to develop the bag after seeing liquor sales drop by as much as 20% after aviation security authorities worldwide adopted restrictions.
