ReMaDe Essex has hosted a workshop on the alternative uses of recycled glass to outline ways of using some of the 45,000 tonnes of recycled glass collected in the UK each year. Attendees were introduced to the advantages of using recycled glass as an aggregate material, an industrial abrasive for shot blasting and as a water filtration material. Case studies were presented, showing recycled glass as a cost-effective substitute for traditional quarried aggregates for road construction and landscaping. By encouraging the use of alternative markets the company hopes to reduce the amount of glass going into landfill, help to meet government recycling targets, improve the environment and assist the development of the local economy.
