Schott is to start producing precision gobs, glass preforms for spherical optical lenses used in digital cameras and other optelectronic products. This will make it the first producer of these preforms outside Japan. The company's factory in Mainz, Germany, has begun to produce the glass gobs between 0.3g-20g each. Schott also supplies other preforms to produce lenses of unusual shapes or sizes. These moves are accompanied by plans to increase production of low Tg glass, which Schott says is the best material for precision blank pressing. Elsewhere, Schott is to start producing its Fiolax special glass pharmaceutical tubing at its factory near Baroda in India. Previously, Indian demand for the product has been satisfied by Schott factories elsewhere. The company is constructing a new melting tank at its Barod plant to double capacity.
