Alcan Packaging Buys Belgian Ampoule Producer

Canada's Alcan Packaging has acquired Belgian pharmaceutical glass packaging manufacturer Veramic for an undisclosed sum, it was reported on 7 December. Veramic, a division of UK pharmaceutical company Intercare Group, was set up in 1923 and is based in Liege, eastern Belgium. The firm produces some 150M ampoule and 60M vials per annum and generates an average turnover of some EUR 5M. It employs 44. Veramic was acquired along with Belgian syringe manufacturer Federa SA by Intercare Group in 2001 for a total EUR 21.5M. Alcan Packaging is a subsidiary of Montreal-based aluminium company AlcanInc. Alcan's activities include bauxite mining, speciality chemicals, power generation and aluminium smelting. It has a total workforce of 88,000 and operates in 58 countries. The company posted revenue of EUR 4.7BN in 2003.
