Researchers at the Oxford Brookes University will be working with owners and managers of pubs and nightclubs in an attempt to reduce the 500,000 tonnes of glass from these outlets which goes into landfill sites every year. The pilot study by the University's Centre for Environmental Studies, follows a similar project in west Oxfordshire in March 2004. The "Glass Goes Green" project was carried out in collaboration with West Oxfordshire District Council, to assess the practicality of collecting glass from rural pubs for recycling. Trial collection results showed that many pub owners and mangers were prepared to make the effort to recycle their glass despite logistical problems and cost. WRAP is now funding a UK-wide study to find ways to reduce the amount of glass going to landfill and address a shortage of materials in the glass packaging industry.
