Japanese-owned Nippon Electric Glass (UK) in Cardiff has announced it will close next month following a series of voluntary redundancies earlier in 2005 after Sony in Bridgend announced it was ending its production of cathode ray TVs. The company's general manager, Ira Walters, said the plant would close by end-November. In a statement released to employees the company said lower sales & 'a drastic reduction in our selling prices' had affected profitability. 'For much of 2005, we have operated at levels significantly below capacity. All market indicators show no signs of an upturn in the global market for cathode ray tubes as the momentum towards alternative technologies gathers even stronger pace. 'For NEG (UK) Ltd, we no longer have a UK domestic customer base & on mainland Europe there is forecast to be a yet further drastic reduction in customer demand.
