Ansac Taking Legal Action In Global Soda Ash Dispute

ANSAC (Association of N American Soda Ash Companies) has complained to the US government about unfair practices carried out by Chinese and Indian soda ash producers. It alleges that China's producers have an unfair advantage as a result of import barriers. The time taken for soda ash to clear through Chinese customs is 30-45 days compared with only a few days in other Asian countries. According to a report, ANSAC has asked the US government to oppose China's bid to join the World Trade Organisation unless it lowers its import duties. US soda ash exports have fallen from US$277m in 1997 to US$189m in 1998. The world market increased during this period. ANSAC is also asking the US government to review the duty free priviliges worth US$1.25bn enjoyed by Indian soda ash imports to the US. These were the result of an embargo by India on US exports.
